A late one-two punch of goals lifted the Nebraska soccer team to a 2-1 win against South Dakota State in a season-opening exhibition Tuesday at Hibner Stadium.
A pair of former Nebraska high school stars teamed up for a 73rd-minute equalizer. Former Gretna standout Sarah Weber deposited a pass from Lincoln East grad Kayma Carpenter into the bottom right of the goal to tie the match 1-1.
The Huskers went ahead in the 78th minute on an own goal to produce the final score. Nebraska outshot its opponent 13-6 but it was the Jackrabbits who struck first.
Kayla Anderson scored in the 17th minute — and the Jackrabbits held on for the rest of the half, and most of the second until Nebraska broke through.
The buildup to Weber's goal was palpable. At risk of a season-opening misstep, Nebraska began peppering the goal in the 70th minute when Haley Peterson's shot was blocked. Ella Guyott fired five minutes later but her attempt sailed off target.
